Greater Rhea

Range

The greater rhea is found in southeastern South America, including Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina, where it lives in grassland and semi-arid scrubland.

Facts

Rheas have unusually long wings for flightless birds. They use their wings like a rudder balance while running and to dodge predators using a zig zag like running pattern.The greater rhea is a silent bird except during mating season, when they make low booming noises, and as chicks, when they give a firework-like whistle.
